In recent years, female labour market participation has rapidly increased in most European countries, but the employment conditions of females have not matched those of males in many cases. In this work, using different approaches, we will try to quantify and decompose the gender pay gap aiming to identify how much of this is due to discrimination and the segregation incidence. About these topics, a group of four European countries (Italy, Greece, Ireland and United Kingdom) is analysed starting from a comparison of their labour market system. The results highlight very different scenarios of discrimination.

Abstract

In recent years, female labour market participation has rapidly increased in most European countries, but the employment conditions of females have not matched those of males in many cases. In this work, using different approaches, we will try to quantify and decompose the gender pay gap aiming to identify how much of this is due to discrimination and the segregation incidence. About these topics, a group of four European countries (Italy, Greece, Ireland and United Kingdom) is analysed starting from a comparison of their labour market system. The results highlight very different scenarios of discrimination.
