Abstract

The series of ‘red guides’ of the Touring Club Italiano represents a precious documentary source for the study of a historical site and a tool for comparing the description of urban and architectural stratiications. Among the pages of a guide with cartographic attachments there are traces for the knowledge of transformations and the protection of cultural heritage, especially for UNESCO World Heritage sites. The guide Possedimenti e colonie (1929), signed by Luigi Vittorio Bertarelli, represents a rare volume of Italian colonial context. A propaganda element for public works carried out in the irst half of the Twentieth century and a possible new tourist destination for Italian people. In addition to the well‑known stories and signiicant contributions on the subject, there are recent interventions of transformation or restoration of the places. With recent photographic repertoire, this essay proposes an update and re‑reading of the thermal complex of Kalithea (1928 ‑1930), that is a modernist construction built on the island of Rhodes, site in a natural setting of extraordinary beauty.
