In this chapter, we look at issues surrounding the learning and teaching of English and other languages in the school systems of two widely different con- texts, namely Asia (East and Southeast) and Continental Europe (primarily countries within the European Union), identifying major trends. We shall show that, while there are significant differences with regard to language education policy within these two broad contexts, there are also some interesting similar- ities. The following sections will outline the salient features of these two areas referring to official data and statistics where available, and trying to identify the sociocultural and political mainsprings. Convergences and discrepancies between the two contexts will be critically appraised, highlighting debatable issues for the development of future policies. Apart from meeting economic and financial needs, ideally, these should also bring about equitable and peaceful societies where people can communicate easily, overcoming both language and ideological barriers, and granting the same access to knowledge and progress to all.

Abstract
Apart from meeting economic and financial needs, ideally, these should also bring about equitable and peaceful societies where people can communicate easily, overcoming both language and ideological barriers, and granting the same access to knowledge and progress to all.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
