The paper reflects on the persistent contamination between the deep Christian inspiration in the culture of caritas and the development of various practices and management of lay assistance that have accompanied the process of modern transformation of urban dynamics. The research analyzes important and long-lived institutions rooted in the capital of the Kingdom of Naples, one of the main cities of Europe between the 16th and 17th centuries. The articulation of their historical development testifies to how much spiritual projection and the involvement of ecclesiastical networks have supplied the commitment to charity as an essential bank of the authority of the Catholic culture of aid to weaknesses, but also as a necessary trace of the distinction of class.
