DEEP INTO NATURE: WOUNDERFUL UNDERWATER WORLDS FOR LAND CHILDREN

Stefania Tondo’s essay "Deep into Nature: Underwater Worlds wounderful land for Children",is part of a volume of international distribution and scientific distribution, resulting from the British IBBY / NCRCL Conference held at Roehampton University, London, in November 2008, and dedicated to Ecology, Environment and Children's Literature. Nature and natural environment, in the light of the problem of global warming, are considered as key issues in Children's Literature as an area where writers have always paid attention to Nature and represented idealizing images and themes connected with Nature, in realistic, catastrophic, and educational senses. Fantasy and imagination can play a vital role in educating young readers and adults to respect and protect nature. The essay analyzes the representations of water nature, in the fantastic underwater worlds of water, rivers, ponds, etc., in order to emphasize, a literary repertoire for children dedicated to, the fundamental value of water as the Giver of Life. Only a careful reading and analysis of these texts and also a reasonable teaching activities based upon a conscious use of water-literary texts for children, we may contribute to the formation of the Green Thought that many authors express (C. Kingsley, l. Carroll, ML Alcott, among those commented in the paper) and on which Anglo-American Ecocriticism eminent theorists as G. Garrad (Ecocriticism, Routledge, London 2004), assess in various areas of knowledge.

Il saggio “Deep into Nature: Wounderful Underwater Worlds for land Children” è parte di un volume di diffusione e di apporto scientifico internazionale, scaturito dalla British IBBY/NCRCL Conference tenuta alla Roehampton University, London, nel Novembre 2008, dedicata a Ecology, Environment and Children’s Literature. La natura e l’ambiente naturale, alla luce del problema del riscaldamento ambientale, rivelano la loro imperfezione quando l’attenzione e l’educazione ambientale vengono messi da parte nelle politiche mondiali. La Children’s Literature è un territorio in cui dare voce e rappresentare immagini e tematiche idealizzanti, realistiche, catastrofiche, educative. La fantasia e l’immaginazione possono svolgere un ruolo fondamentale per educare i piccoli lettori e gli adulti al rispetto e alla salvaguardia della natura. Il saggio che si pone all’attenzione, è un avvio a una ricerca sulle rappresentazioni fantastiche nel mondo acquatico sottomarino, dei fiumi, degli stagni, eccetera, per mettere in evidenza, nel repertorio letterario di lingua inglese rivolto al pubblico dell’infanzia e giovanile, del passato e nelle proposte attuali, il valore fondamentale, vivifico, dell’elemento acqua. Solo un’attenta lettura e analisi di questi testi e un consapevole uso anche didattico di essi possono contribuire alla formazione del Green Thought che molti autori esprimono (C. Kingsley, l. Carroll, M.L. Alcott, tra quelli commentati nel saggio ) e su cui insigni teorici anglo-americani dell’Ecocriticism , come G. Garrad (Ecocriticism, Routledge, London 2004), si soffermano in varie aree del sapere.
