The contribution discusses three fragments of Aristoxenus of Tarentum (70, 76 and 124 W.2) relating to the phenomenon of the so-called ‘new music’. These fragments are joined by a passage from Pseudo Plutarch's De musica (27, 1140D-E) and one from Athenaeus (14, 631e-f), which certainly derive from Aristoxenus. Particular attention is paid to the link between ‘new music’ and theatre that is emphasised in all these texts, and in which political implications are suggested.

Abstract

The contribution discusses three fragments of Aristoxenus of Tarentum (70, 76 and 124 W.2) relating to the phenomenon of the so-called ‘new music’. These fragments are joined by a passage from Pseudo Plutarch's De musica (27, 1140D-E) and one from Athenaeus (14, 631e-f), which certainly derive from Aristoxenus. Particular attention is paid to the link between ‘new music’ and theatre that is emphasised in all these texts, and in which political implications are suggested.
