The letter to the priest Faustus de situ Hierusalem written by the pseudo-Eucherius (fifth century) and the De situ Terrae Sanctae of the arcideacon Teodosius (sixth century) are main examples of the connection between pilgrimage and clerical world in the Early Middles Ages. The early narrative sources relating the pilgrims’ visits to Jerusalem, called Itineraria or Descriptiones Terrae Sanctae, go back to Late Antiquity and show the development of the practice even after the Muslim conquest of Palestine.
