This paper analyzes the imaginary and historical role that the Mediterranean triad acquired, born under the sign of three legendary Olympian deities as Demeter, Dionysus and Athena. They constitute the symbolic and ritual horizon of food cultures in Ancient Greece. Oil, wheat and wine, are not only the three pillars of nutrition of the people who lived in those areas in ancient times, but at the same time are the three pillars of a civil ethic. This last, assumes the form of sociability, in the polis, and the form of a practice of communion, through conviviality. This paper also identifies in the myth of Demeter (the bringer of seasons) and in the descent of the virgin Persephone (the flowers picker) into the Hades, the emblem of the mythical-historical transition from hunting and gathering societies to the cereal-based one.

Abstract
This paper analyzes the imaginary and historical role that the Mediterranean triad acquired, born under the sign of three legendary Olympian deities as Demeter, Dionysus and Athena. They constitute the symbolic and ritual horizon of food cultures in Ancient Greece. Oil, wheat and wine, are not only the three pillars of nutrition of the people who lived in those areas in ancient times, but at the same time are the three pillars of a civil ethic. This last, assumes the form of sociability, in the polis, and the form of a practice of communion, through conviviality. This paper also identifies in the myth of Demeter (the bringer of seasons) and in the descent of the virgin Persephone (the flowers picker) into the Hades, the emblem of the mythical-historical transition from hunting and gathering societies to the cereal-based one.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
