Letture della grecità d'Occidente nella storiografia di epoca fascista: Emanuele Ciaceri e la Storia della Magna Grecia

The downplaying of the role proper to the Greek element within the civilisation of Magna Graecia and ancient Sicily and, on the other hand, the valorisation of the indigenous (or, better, indigenous-Italic) component is a trait that characterises the historiographic production of the Fascist era on these areas. The contribution deals with this production, and proposes to recognise in it the final outcome of a historiographical perspective dating back at least to the 16th century and which runs through what is written in Italy on Magna Graecia and ancient Sicily. More specifically, the paper investigates how the theme of the relationship between Greek colonists and local populations is declined in an imposing work of synthesis (Emanuele Ciaceri's Storia della Magna Grecia) that is considered paradigmatic of Fascist historiography on the Greek world of the West.
