Structural Devices Concerning the Progressive Outer Shell Construction in Brunelleschi’s Dome

The study, through the interaction of analysis of sources and investigation of aspects of construction, statics and form examines the initial construction phases of the S. Maria del Fiore dome which led to the building variations of the new program of January 1426 which resolved for the realisation of semi-arches to be set among corner and middle ribs.The analysis highlights the essential static role of the mentioned constructional device, which together with the herringbone and the “corda blanda”, allowed the construction of the dome structure without the centring engendering the structural system of the rotational dome during the raising of the dome construction.

Attraverso l’interazione tra studio delle fonti ed esame della forma (compiuta anche attraverso il “ridisegno” e la rappresentazione dell’opera nelle fasi costruttive) si è interpretata la funzione costruttiva dei semi-archi orizzontali posti tra costoloni angolari e mediani, introdotti da Brunelleschi nel nuovo programma costruttivo del 1426. Il lavoro si inserisce nel dibattito scientifico sugli aspetti e i problemi della costruzione della cupola.
