Il silenzio delle sirene. Antropologia di un mito

The essay investigates the mythography of the sirens and examines in depth the topic of silence, which makes the sirens as figures oscillating between the two extremes of the voice: singing and silence. If the genealogy of the sirens begins with the sound, its last mythological landing, in diachronic terms, is in their silence; this condition, in terms of the structural analysis of myth, does not mean the end for the sirens, but only their way of existing otherwise, the possibility of living in the antipodes of the imaginary. In this way the mythologem of the sirens’ silence, in its many mythical variations, is the counterpoint to the theme of bewitching voice. In this way, the silence constitutes an important theme in the mythical genealogy that ties all the enchantresses in a single corpus of imagination, whose vitality is evidenced by the variety of its interpretations, which in every age have found new reasons to be thought and be handed down.

Il lavoro indaga la mitografia sirenica approfondendo il tema del silenzio, che rende le sirene figure oscillanti tra i due estremi opposti della voce: il canto e il silenzio. Se la genealogia sirenica ha inizio con il suono, il suo ultimo approdo mitologico, in termini diacronici, è nell’esercizio del silenzio, una condizione che, sul piano dell’analisi strutturale del mito, non significa la loro fine, ma semplicemente il loro esistere altrimenti, la possibilità di abitare gli antipodi dell’immaginario. In questo modo il mitologema del silenzio delle sirene, nelle sue diverse varianti mitiche, fa da controcanto al tema della voce ammaliatrice. Finendo per costituire un tema importante nella genealogia mitica che lega tutte le incantatrici in un unico corpus dell’immaginario, la cui vitalità è testimoniata dalla varietà delle sue interpretazioni, che in ogni epoca hanno trovato nuove ragioni per essere pensate e tramandate.
