This study aims to read the geography of the Bay of Naples through the analysis of the settlements of some selected historic architecture case-studies. The selected architecture are significant for the ways in which form and construction interpret the site and relate to the whole bay. In this way, reversing the point of view of the representation, the fundamental signs and the constructive nature of the historic architecture draw the morphology and the character of the place, bringing back its identity. From this point of view, architecture case-studies become representative when showing particular strength in the settlement besides their differences; that is when they mark emergencies, relate to emblematic places, define edges, respond to specific characteristics of the site, place on strategic points, following previous structures. The whole of those traces of settlement constructs the narrative drawing of the bay geography. The architecture selection case-study opens and closes with two examples that besides being distant in history and placed on the opposite sides of the bay, are similar in the architectural intention to catch the edge of the landscape: the Roman villa of Ariadne along the ancient coastline near Castellammare di Stabia, and the Casa girevole by Lamont Young on the island of Vivara. The Villa of Ariadne, developed between the first century BC and the first century AD on the plain at the top of the hill of Varano, follows the profile of the steep original costline, and is defined by a basis villae, with imposing retaining walls intertwined to a system of paths of access. The formal and constructive choices of the Casa girevole, designed by the architect Lamont Young for himself at the early of the Twentieth century, on the southern point of the narrow summit of the island of Vivara, mark the landscape significance of the site. The settlement traces of the selected architecture case-studies emphasize form and character of the bay and a itinerary tour connecting them would become the narration of the bay geography.

Abstract
The settlement traces of the selected architecture case-studies emphasize form and character of the bay and a itinerary tour connecting them would become the narration of the bay geography.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
