The book aims to provide archaeologists, historians and writing system specialists with a complete and up-to-date picture of the oldest form of written communication in Greece in the 2nd millennium BC: the so-called Linear B. This writing system, derived from the writing experiences of the most ancient Minoan political formations, appeared in Mycenaean Greece around the middle of the 15th century BC and was adopted by the Mycenaean administrations as a tool to control the production and circulation of certain categories of goods. Its relationship with the previous Cretan scripts, the organisation of the system of logograms and syllabograms of which it is composed, the writing media it uses and its complex relationship with the language (a particularly archaic Greek dialect) in use by the Mycenaean city-state administrations are therefore analysed.

Abstract
The book aims to provide archaeologists, historians and writing system specialists with a complete and up-to-date picture of the oldest form of written communication in Greece in the 2nd millennium BC: the so-called Linear B. This writing system, derived from the writing experiences of the most ancient Minoan political formations, appeared in Mycenaean Greece around the middle of the 15th century BC and was adopted by the Mycenaean administrations as a tool to control the production and circulation of certain categories of goods. Its relationship with the previous Cretan scripts, the organisation of the system of logograms and syllabograms of which it is composed, the writing media it uses and its complex relationship with the language (a particularly archaic Greek dialect) in use by the Mycenaean city-state administrations are therefore analysed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
