Ungaretti, a restless ambassador in post-1918 Europe — Besides being recognized on the interna tional arena as a poet who represents European art, Ungaretti was also a determined man able to build cultural bridges between different nations both before and after the Great War. During the twenty years of Fascism, which he supported, the poet often struggled to defend the supreme and universal values of poetry. Although, even now, he pays the consequences of his compromise with the regime, his authentic poetic testimony stays alive.
