Authors investigate characteristics of personality in a sample of 39 diabetic children, aged 8.5-14.0. Personality was assessed by the Big Five Questionnaire Children, which explores five dimensions. The results showed that diabetic patients scored within the normal range for social and cognitive dimensions but obtained high scores for emotional instability. Expression and Anxiety were detected as well. According to literature our findings suggest that diabetic children may be at risk for behavioural disturbances. Effects of emotional instability on compliance with medical treatment are discussed. Data support the need for prevention of childhood psychopathology in diabetes.
