On December 12th 2011, Università Bocconi hosted a consensus conference on primary care. The most relevant stakeholders of the sector were among the participants to the meeting, many of them being also the authors of this paper. The conference aimed at reflecting on the state of the art of primary care in Italy, with a specific focus on the role played by general practitioners. On the basis of the collection and analysis of the available scientific literature and their experiences, the conference participants have worked out a diagnosis of the current Italian system of general practice and elaborated on the degree of implementation of the reforms that have involved the sector. This paper summarises the main reflections and conclusions of that day.
