In this work we study the income mobility in Italy between 1993 and 2000, by leaning on the availability of two different sources of longitudinal income data: the Survey of Household Income and Wealth (SHIW) by the Bank of Italy and the Italian component of the European Community Household Panel (ECHP) conducted by Istat and coordinated by Eurostat. The interest is centred on the changes in household disposable income evaluated both through the transition matrix between income decile classes and through the inequality-based approach. Special attention is devoted to the definition of income components according to the two surveys as well as to the study of the mobility in the tails of income distribution.
