Freedom of expression in modernity is discussed with respect to two of its many aspects: (i) the relevance of historical understanding for a better theoretical analysis; (ii) the relevance of the actual exercise of the right of free expression (both in its individual and collective dimensions) to assess the role of freedom and expression in the crisis of contemporary democracies.
