Norman Military Equipment in Written, Archeological, and Iconographic Sources (11th and 12th Centuries) One of the most enthralling stories from 11th and 12th-century Europe is undoubtedly that of the Normans. The spread of their power from Northern Europe through Southern Italy and Sicily, to the eastern shores of the Mediterranean was the result of a war effort without equal, battles whose success was due sometimes to sheer luck and other times mainly to the courage and military skill of their commanders in the field. The present essay draws on various written sources and contemporary iconographic representations documenting the armor and weapons of a Norman soldier and the tools and equipment used by the troops in their brilliant campaigns in England, Southern Italy, North Africa, and the Middle East.
