During the last four decades, extraordinary progress has been made in the academic research field concerning the works of Benjamin Constant, thus uprooting long-standing prejudices and disclosing new critical perspectives. In spite of this, a particular area of research has still been neglected to this day, namely Constant’s thoughts on political economy. Due to its unjustly ignored significance, the aim of this essay is to critically analyse Constant’s thought on the matter as it is developed in his “Principes de politique” (1806) and in “Commentaire à Filangieri”, along with other works concerning industrialism. This critical analysis aims to shed light on the matter, with a special focus on the following: what kind of relationship did the political thinker have with the current thought on political economy? Did the social question have any bearing on Constant’s economical beliefs? What place did economic freedom occupy in his wider belief system
