After focusing on the peculiar interpretative story of the political Alfieri - that of having been, for at least a century and a half, a mirror in which many Italian political cultures have recognized themselves - the essay focuses on Alfieri’s political thought, in particular through the analysis of Della tirannide, highlighting the original (and misunderstood) contribution that this treatise brought to the great eighteenth-century debate on despotism: the modernly political cut of the analysis, the tight logical-argumentative structure, the definition of European despotism as desguised despotism, because covered by the deceptive veil of the legal apparatus. All in a resolutely republican perspective, enriched however by some proto-liberal intuitions
