L’evoluzione del divario tra il Nord e il Sud dal dopoguerra a oggi. The evolution of the gap between North and South from the post-war period to today

This contribution analyzes the evolution of the North-South dynamic in Italy between the National Unit of 1861 and the phase immediately following the great recession, which began in 2007-2008. Using and cross-referencing quantitative and qualitative sources, an analysis of the most up-to-date indicators of the Italian regional gaps and their evolution is presented, through two main interpretations: a) the relationship between the national economic dynamics and that of the South of Italy over time; b) the changes in the policy strategies adopted by the public decision-maker in the various phases through which the country-system (liberal state, fascism, republic) and the effects on the southern and national productive fabric are affected. One of the salient aspects of the essay is that both elements are treated within the broader dynamics of economic cycles, which affected western countries and Italy during the twentieth century, up to the great crisis.

Il presente contributo analizza l’evoluzione della dinamica Nord-Sud in Italia tra l’Unità nazionale del 1861 e la fase immediatamente successiva alla grande recessione, cominciata nel 2007-2008. Utilizzando e incrociando fonti di carattere quantitativo e qualitativo, viene presentata un’analisi dei più aggiornati indicatori dei divari regionali italiani e della loro evoluzione, attraverso due chiavi di lettura principali: a) il rapporto tra la dinamica economica nazionale e quella del Mezzogiorno d’Italia nel corso del tempo; b) le modificazioni delle strategie di policy adottate dal decisore pubblico nelle diverse fasi attraversate dal sistema-Paese (Stato liberale, fascismo, Repubblica) e gli effetti sul tessuto produttivo meridionale e nazionale. Uno degli aspetti salienti del saggio è che ambedue questi elementi sono trattati all’interno della più ampia dinamica dei cicli economici, che ha interessato i Paesi occidentali e l’Italia durante il Novecento, fino alla grande crisi.
