Un’Assemblea Costituente per il Cile

On 11 April 2021, elections will be held for the formation of the Chilean Constitutional Convention. This will close a cycle of constitutional history that began in 1973 with the coup d'état of General Pinochet. The 1980 Constitution, approved on the initiative of the Military Government Council, while introducing some formal rules of democracy, had in fact solidified the pre-existing political and economic balances. Following the estallido social and the signing of the Acuerdo Por la Paz Social y la Nueva Constitución, the «hourglass-shaped» constituent process began, consisting of three phases: national plebiscite — convención constitucional — ratification by mandatory constitutional plebiscite.
