Francesco De Sanctis' work has a literary page and a political page, as was often the case in the 19th century. However, unlike authors such as Alfieri or M.me de Staël, De Sanctis' political page did not remain a written page, but accompanied and supported his political action as a minister and as a deputy. The aim of this essay is to return to De Sanctis' parliamentary speeches, which have not so far received the attention they deserve, in order to analyse their formal structure and some of their most relevant contents. Among these, the contribution to the difficult apprenticeship of the parliamentary regime (intended as deliberative practice), the development of a political language inspired by concreteness and feasibility (distinct and distant from academic discourse), the constant comparison with the European dimension. As for the content, his reflection on the school and the administrative structure that must support its action and the call for a development in a bipartisan sense of the Italian political system are of considerable interest. A development that, however realistically argued, will remain a utopia
