«Leissons la vanité et tenons la vérité». Guglielmo di Santo Stefano storiografo dei primi Ospedalieri

William of Santo Stefano, hospitaller of the Priory of Lombardy who moved to Cyprus to assume the role of commander for the Order, was the author, between the end of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth century, of a text known as Exordium Hospitalis which traces the history of the origins of the Hospital of Saint John in Jerusalem within the framework of the crusader movement. The so-called Exordium, included in the collections commissioned to William himself containing the Rule, the Statutes and other texts of legal and literary nature, sharply differs for purpose and content both from the contemporary Miracula as well as from the previous chronicle literature which William knew very well. The author demonstrates critical sense and ability to analyse both literary sources and the acts that he had been able to find in the archives of the Order.

Guglielmo di Santo Stefano, ospedaliere del Priorato di Lombardia e poi responsabile della commenda di Cipro, è autore, tra la fine del XIII secolo e gli inizi del XIV secolo, di un testo noto come Exordium Hospitalis che ripercorre le vicende delle origini dell’Ospedale di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme nel contesto pre-crociato e crociato. L’Exordium, incluso nelle raccolte ufficiali commissionate allo stesso Guglielmo contenenti la Regola, gli Statuti e altri testi di natura giuridica e letteraria, si distingue per finalità e contenuto sia dai coevi Miracula che dalla letteratura cronachistica precedente cui pure Guglielmo aveva fatto riferimento. L’autore dimostra senso critico con le fonti narrative e capacità di scandagliare gli atti che aveva potuto compulsare negli archivi dell’Ordine.
