The introductory chapter introduce the issue of civil liability in relation to autonomous vehicles. It start with a summary on the state of the art of the legislation at the international level and in the European Union on the civil liabiltiy scheme in case of accident coused by at least one (semi) autonomous vehicle, to which a large number of legal systems examined in this book belong. Then an overview of the regulation of civil liability for accidents caused by autonomous vehicles in each country considered is provided, based on the results of a questionnaire filled by the authors and also reperesneted by graphics and maps that give a global overview of these results. Finally, the authors offer their conclusions.
