The chpater focuses on the problem of identifying liability rules for self-driving cars, starting from the defintion of autonomous vehicles, with specific referece to types and automation levels. Then it analyses the current framework of civil liability rules in road traffic at european and Italian legal systems, referring in particoular to the figure of the tortfeasor and the civil liability scheme in relation to the SAE J3016 standard for Driving Automation. A comparative overview on the regulation of the liability for (semi)autonomous cars accident across Europe is provided. The conclusions underlines the need for an ad hoc framework of rules for vehicles of level 5 of SAE standard of automation.
