The essay focuses the figure and the work of Maurizio Fioravanti, a talented historian of constitutions who died in 2022. Fioravanti also offered significant contributions to the studies of philosophy of law, above and beyond the formal denominations and disciplinary barriers that did not fit well with the broad and profound scope of his reflection. Through his reflections, some essential features of twentieth-century constitutional democracy are redesigned, highlighting the historical-philosophical premises, the developments on the constitutional level and the weaknesses, which have led to its decline in today’s context.
