Nascita e formalizzazione di una tradizione discorsiva dall’oralità alla scrittura: gli avvisi e le osservazioni nei testi vesuviani (1631-1760)

Sub-Plinian eruption of Vesuvius in 1631 gave rise to a very rich production of texts, mostly in print, of various kinds. Between the second half of the 17th century and the 18th century, the tradition of the giornali (17th century) and chronicles and reports on individual eruptions is particularly important. These works intercepted a circulation of information that crossed oral and written channels and involved speakers and writers from different cultural levels. The purpose of this observational activity was to intercept early geological phenomena that could fore-shadow an eruption. The texts describing and listing the signa took on a definite struc-ture and syntax in the second half of the 18th century, heralding the season of scientific observation of Vesuvius, inaugurated in 1863 by Luigi Palmieri with his meteorological diaries

L’eruzione subpliniana del Vesuvio del 1631 fu all’origine di una ricchissima produzione di testi, perlopiù a stampa, di genere diverso. Tra la seconda metà del Seicento e il Set-tecento è particolarmente rilevante la tradizione dei giornali (sec. XVII) e delle cronache e relazioni relative a singole eruzioni. In queste opere si intercetta una circolazione di informazioni che attraversano i canali orale e scritto e interessano parlanti e scriventi appartenenti a differenti livelli culturali. Lo scopo di quest’attività di osservazione mi-rava a intercettare precocemente i fenomeni geologici che potevano preannunciare un’eruzione. I testi contenenti la descrizione e l’enumerazione dei signa assumono nella seconda metà del Settecento una struttura e una sintassi definite, che prelude alla stagione dell’osservazione scientifica del Vesuvio, inaugurata nel 1863 da Luigi Palmieri con i suoi diari meteorologici
