This paper analyzes the main changes made to the CAP by the reform for the period 2023-2027. They entail a profound transformation of European agricultural policies aimed at responding effectively to the pressing environmental, economic and social challenges of the 21st century. The new CAP is based on the paradigm of enhanced cross-compliance, i.e., a new approach that implies that direct subsidies are closely linked to respect of strict environmental and climate criteria, with a dual aim. On the one hand, ensure that public support actively contributes to the fight against climate change and the protection of biodiversity; and, on the other hand, push the agricultural sector toward more sustainable and natural resource-friendly practices. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the critical issues that have emerged during initial implementation, as well as to give an account of the most recent initiatives put in place by the Commission to overcome these obstacles
