The book adopts the metaphor of the 'journey' to refer to the passage of a text from one linguistic-cultural 'space' to another. The translator’s task is to find the most successful route to get to the final destination. Each chapter has the same structure: it is revolves around text samples of various types, sometimes presented with their translation(s), with the aim of guiding the reader along an awareness-raising path of comprehension, disambiguation and recreation, in the firm belief that the translation competence builds upon the critical analysis of original texts and translations. The authors pick from the field of text analysis and translation studies those authors and theories which most clearly help to support their methodology, without the aim of being exhaustive in terms of theoretical framework. The reason is to place the act of translation at the centre, making use of theories only when they are actually useful to teach how to translate. Nonetheless, plenty of bibliographical references at the end of each chapter refer to a detailed bibliography that can help readers widen their knowledge of the topics dealt with, if they so wish. The volume can prove a useful read to those who would like to become translators and to professionals who wish to take the opportunity to rethink their approach to translation: rather than being a comprehensive survey of translation, it is a collection of what, in the authors’ opinion, would be useful items in a translator’s luggage when she/he starts this journey. The authors are both involved in translation teaching at university level. Translators themselves, they have also researched and written extensively about translation.

Da un universo linguistico-culturale ad un altro, per il tramite di un professionista che deve ricercare il percorso più efficace: questo è il viaggio che un testo deve intraprendere per diventare una traduzione. Testi in viaggio è un manuale di traduzione nel senso meno letterale del termine. Ciascun capitolo ruota intorno a testi di vario tipo e genere, talvolta affiancati dalle traduzioni, e il lettore viene coinvolto nella riflessione sulle loro peculiarità e sulle possibili strategie da mettere in atto per il loro traghettamento in un diverso universo linguistico-culturale. Della traduttologia e dell’analisi del testo ci si serve in modo asistematico, facendo riferimento solo agli studiosi e alle riflessioni immediatamente utili a ragionare sugli aspetti presi in esame. Il volume si presta ad una lettura a vari livelli che lo rende utile sia a studenti di traduzione che a docenti e a traduttori professionisti che sentano il bisogno di continuare a riflettere e di confrontarsi sul tema. Non una panoramica esauriente sul tradurre, ma una raccolta di ciò che, secondo le autrici, occorre «mettere in valigia» quando si intraprende questo tipo di viaggio.
