The community as a sociological laboratory: Franco Ferrarotti in Castellammare di Stabia · This article conceptualizes Castellammare di Stabia as a sociological laboratory through which to examine the transformations of Southern Italy in the second half of the twentieth century. Building on Franco Ferrarotti’s pioneering research, the analysis combines theoretical reflection with empirical investigation, highlighting the role of local communities within broader processes of modernization and social crisis. These dynamics are reconsidered both in relation to classical theoretical formulations of community and in dialogue with recent scholarship on deindustrialization.
